Built on a pushcart, powered by pride

What started as a single oak pushcart in Warwick Mall in 1981 has grown into Rhode Island's premier destination for local pride and personality. Founded by Gary Bliss Garabedian at just 21 years old, Where Is RI (formerly Aah La Cart) has spent over four decades bringing unique merchandise to Rhode Islanders and visitors alike.

At the age of just 21 years old during the summer of 1981, Gary Bliss Garabedian was touring Faneuil Hall marketplace in Boston when he couldn’t help but notice a retail area called the Bull Market. This retail area consisted of wooden push-carts that were used to retail various products. He became curious about why pushcarts were not in the center aisles of shopping malls.

Gary quickly convinced his parents and grandfather to loan him $2,600 to buy a beautiful oak pushcart, and the cart was placed in the center of Warwick Mall. Selling from a shoe box cash register, the initial products on the cart in October of ’81 were printed shoelaces (a hot fad) and Rubik’s Cubes. The cart became an instant hit, and as the story goes, the pushcart would soon roll into other malls throughout New England.

Growth and Evolution

Throughout the years, the push-cart concept of retailing was replaced by a large kiosk in Warwick Mall and even a few stores called Land of Aahs. Additionally, Aah La Cart had other specialty retail concepts under its umbrella:

Between 2010 and today, the company has found its niche by focusing exclusively on pop-up shops. The future of the company will be with both pop-up shops and a new e-commerce platform.

The Next Chapter

Currently, due to the demand in e-commerce sales, Aah La Cart is embarking on a new online sales division titled WhereIsRI.com – where you can find fun and humorous Rhode Island themed t-shirts and so much more!
